Variable Speed Limit and Ramp Metering for Mixed Traffic Flows: A Review and Open Questions

چکیده

The trend of increasing traffic demand is causing congestion on existing urban roads, including motorways, resulting in a decrease Level Service (LoS) and safety, an increase fuel consumption. Lack space non-compliance with cities’ sustainable plans prevent the expansion new transport infrastructure some areas. To alleviate aforementioned problems, appropriate solutions come from domain Intelligent Transportation Systems by implementing control services. Those services include Variable Speed Limit (VSL) Ramp Metering (RM) for motorways. VSL reduces speed incoming vehicles to bottleneck area, RM limits inflow through on-ramps. In addition, development Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) Connected AVs (CAVs), opportunities are emerging. can reduce especially so case mixed flows where CAVs fully comply system output. Currently, there no overview algorithms applications flows. Therefore, we present comprehensive survey most recent reinforcement learning-based approaches. Best practices flow summarized viewpoints future research directions presented, currently open questions.

Novel Freeway Traffic Control with Variable Speed Limit and Coordinated Ramp Metering

control freeway traffic in the United States, particularly in California. It is recognized that ramp metering can directly control the flow into the freeway (demand) and the average density immediately downstream, which indirectly affects the traffic upstream. After drivers enter the freeway, their collective behaviors are not controlled, which determines the traffic flow pattern. In addition, ...

Model predictive control for optimal coordination of ramp metering and variable speed control

We apply model predictive control to optimally coordinate variable speed limits and ramp metering. The basic idea is that speed limits can increase the (density) range in which ramp metering is useful. For the prediction we use a slightly adapted version of the METANET traffic flow model that takes the variable speed limits into account. The optimal control signals aim at minimizing the total t...

Model predictive control for optimal coordination of ramp metering and variable speed limits

This paper discusses the optimal coordination of variable speed limits and ramp metering in a freeway traffic network, where the objective of the control is to minimize the total time that vehicles spend in the network. Coordinated freeway traffic control is a new development where the control problem is to find the combination of control measures that results in the best network performance. T...

Application of Variable Speed Limits and Ramp Metering to Improve Safety and Efficiency of Freeways

Research recently conducted at the University of Central Florida involving crashes on Interstate-4 (I-4) freeway in Orlando, Florida led to the creation of new statistical and neural networks models that are capable of determining rear-end and lane-change crash risks along the freeway in real-time. For determining the rear-end crash risk, it was found that rear-end crashes occur within one of t...
